As much as I hate EC for a variety of reasons it gives the game a community feel. In addition, probably over half the server enjoys that aspect of the game.
I will say though, limiting the /auc function would definitely help the spam. You'd have to balance that with the full time vendors who may have multiple lines worth of goodies to sell.
