In my opinion there is a massive influx of overly-sensitive people making threads about how their feelings were hurt because in their opinion someone is being rude to them.
If someone is running a duo or trio they are not required to invite anyone, nor should they if they prefer their setup. Smaller, balanced groups are faster exp and not everyone is seeking nostalgic slogfest grinding. Some people are on their 8th characters and have been in unrest enough to make them suicidal.
I don't agree with not inviting someone because of a penalty, but most of the time people crying about this particular matter leave out the fact that it was a ranger or knight. It's not exactly surprising that not everyone wants a big hit to their exp and an underpowered class in their group. When do you see people rejecting bards? Pretty much never, yet they still get the hybrid penalty. Monks are also rarely turned away in my experience. If this situation was nearly as bad as people claim you would see a lot more halflings. I'm not saying it doesn't suck when you are that troll shadowknight, but like Tecmos said, you made the choice. No one forced you to eat that troll penalty.
And to answer your rhetorical question masking the rant, NO, there is not suddenly a massive amount of douchebags on the server - you are simply not used to games that require interaction. People were always doucehbags, you just didn't talk to them in every other mmo.
For the record I've been playing off and on since early 2011 and have had very few encounters where I have thought someone was truly trying to be rude to me.
