Well, this computer is relatively new (to me). I've only had it with Mavericks, and never had the chance to try installing EQ on another OS. I'd hate to have to downgrade strictly for EQ, but it may be worth it!

Glad to hear you were able to get it working with the Mavericks guide. I had it working on Mountain Lion and had no issues when upgrading to Mavericks, so I was sure that wasn't it.
Wine simply creates an emulated windows environment with the bare essentials that allow whatever program you install within it to run on you Mac. The error you were getting was a Windows error, so something in Wine wasn't functioning properly... a driver communication problem is most likely.
Wine can be tricky when trying to resolve issues between different systems with different hardware specs, but most problems can be resolved as there's always someone out there who has run into a similar issue
