On my 19 necro at least, my pet drops hit points about as fast as I do. Straight-up tanking is out of the question on anything above light blues. On the other hand, I've heard mages complain that they have to memorize a low level nuke so the pet doesn't steal most of the XP, because they can kill most efficiently just healing their pet.
Fear-kiting isn't particularly viable, either. Mob flee speed is much too fast. For me at least, agro-kiting seems to yield the best results as a necro.
