don't Mormons require themselves to stock 6 months of food? They're hardly rednecks.
Regardless of any future blackout, it doesn't hurt to have at least a few weeks of food/water/(essential)meds stored up incase of natural disaster. I would say it's irresponsible to not do so if you have kids.
A means of self defense also isn't a bad idea if/when a natural disaster strikes and people turn to looting(this happens).
