It's a social thing, people chat with the host and each other. And sometimes the host invites the people watching to come join their group or even gives out their vent server so the people watching can get on and chat. It isn't about watching someone play EQ, it's about having a good time with EQ players.

This guy hit the nail on the head. Not only do people tend to watch when they are not able to play (work on down time, school on down time), but so many people stumble in and say they remember the glorious everquest days and are shocked to see they can re-experience it.
I definitely like to chat with people, and make friends in the stream, and in game. I like to give out extra items that are donated, learn stuff from viewers. Lots of open discussion about anything really. I have met some awesome people by doing it. I feel a lot closer to the community.
