Well, I think I've got it partially tracked down.....who would have thought that a dodgy old laptop like mine was too powerful for EverQuest

As far as I am aware there is no overclocking.
I'm running a eMachines E642 with an AMD Athlon II X2 P340 @ 2.20 GHz and 8 gig of ram. O/S is Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 64-bit.
1) used msconfig to disable 1 core and rebooted.
2) set compatibility mode on eqgame.exe EverQuest.exe and the desktop shortcut to Windows 2000 mode, run as administrator and disable desktop composition.
This allows me to log in, set up a character and enter the world (specifically Felwithe). I note that changing zones takes quite a while - but that was Classic EQ

Have tried a number of other compatibility modes
NT Server 5
XP SP2
XP SP3
but none of these will let me log in.
Tried downloading WinEQ2 but that failed as I could not update DirectX
