But until then, a really effective combo (not the only one, but just an example) would be:
Tesch Val Sinisch
Charred Guardian Shield
Though
Paw of Opolla and
Pearl Kedge Totem would likely be better for non-solo situations, or where dogdog does all of the work.
At level 18 though, I think you're best trying to find someone to kill
Soaring Brightfeather for you, to get the spear off of him. You'll have a half-decent range item for when you replace the spear on your primary. Then maybe do the
Testament of Vanear quest.
As far as armor goes, I suggest
Bloodstained Tunic
