Only reason to use HID bulbs is if you are in a state where its fine to cultivate. I've grown nug in my house for years just using CFLs. To grow 4 plants was the equivalent of plugging in 1 extra computer 24hr/day for around 8weeks, then 12hr/day for another 4-6. With a fan you can literally have the bulbs in contact in/around the plant with no burning. u can grasp a bulb thats been running nonstop for a month and its just warm. That extra energy consumption wont set off any flags, and the heat output is less then a laptop. I recommend it to anyone trying to save a little cash on their herb.
Smell problems? make your own carbon scrubber for like 75$. After these needs are met, the only thing that can get you caught is a big mouth and shitty "friends." Honestly getting caught for cultivation w/ today's tech is just dumb. If you dont like the idea of CFL u can even go LED for LESS power consumption/heat. All it takes is a little knowledge of what freq's/durations of light your plants need for what developmental stage they are in (vegetative/flowering).

I guess that is a possibility. I never have cops knocking on my door for anything, so I don't know. I do know that unless they have a warrant that specifically states they are looking for marijuana plants, that a locked closet door will send them packing back to the court house for another warrant to open the door. /shrug.
