EQ is not balanced. It's possible to have the diversity of EQ and still have it be balanced.

Its hard, WoW did not pull off the diversity of EQ IMO. Name a few that do?
Shadowrun the FPS almost did, but still lacked a few core abilities like root/freezing opponents.
Team Fortress Classic and New falls short but, you have snipers (Tank/DPS/AE), soldiers (AE), Demo (AeSpam), Medics (Heals), Agents (Stealth), Recons (Mobility)...
And by no means were any of the Team Fortress classes balanced either. A minigunner would splatter the fuck out of a recon if the recon wasnt already conc jumping by at hyperspeeds, even then you could catch them in the air and stop em in their tracks, was glorious gibbing a recon in flight towards the flag =)
Yet a recon could use terrain/level design to get arounda minigunner or snipe them slowly from cover. Thats how balance was introduced by players.
