I own guns legally (including an AR-15) and I am in no way a gun nut. I think you are confusing gun nuts with incompetent people. And it's a shame that most people think this way, once a person of a certain race/religion/belief/political view/etc does something stupid then that must mean they ALL do it.

I do not show them to family members. They are not loaded in my house and only will be loaded if there is a threat. They are kept in a safe at all times except when I am going to a shooting range, in which case my unloaded gun is in a lock box and locked in my trunk with no ammo around it.

Not all people who own guns are idiots. And myself and my family feel a lot more safe knowing I am properly trained to use a gun if something were to happen in my home. Until there is a way to guarantee that no one will illegally own a gun to use it to perform a crime (which is impossible), I will never ever give up my right to own a firearm.

However I do agree that fully automatic weapons have one purpose and one purpose only: to kill as much as you can as fast as you can. I do agree these should not be legal to own, even though they are highly regulated and only legal in, from what I can remember, 37 states.
