Just explore the world, don't get too hung up on leveling and getting the best gear and don't be afraid to experiment and try new things. This server is so top heavy that there's a ton of nice folks available to bail you out of any tough spots such as an irretrievable corpse. You'll eventually get the hang of the game and the levels and the gear will come and you'll appreciate it all the more.
By the way, I'm extremely jealous of everyone who comes into this game never having played it before. I wish I could come into it again with fresh eyes.
