I don't remember that line of spells aborbing spell damage, but admittedly I could be mistaken. I thought spellshield was the first spell to prevent any spell damage (that a wizard could cast).
Like I said, I could be wrong, but I think I would remember it preventing spell damage since I played on a pvp server and pretty much had to run around fully buffed at all points to survive
