Quite to the contrary, many species of
Prunus (the stone fruits, mainly) have some of the hardest, toughest, heaviest, and most impact resistant wood in the world - in fact Blackthorn, the preferred stock for making traditional shillelaghs is
Prunus spinosa aka Sloe. Many fruit trees (deciduous, fruit bearing "hardwood") have these qualities. For instance, Persimmon is perhaps the hardest wood native to north america. Exceptions exist obviously (hickory, some kinds of maple, black locust, hawthorne, etc), but stone fruit wood is an extremely good type of wood from which to choose weapon stocks.
