Compare Russia's economic liberalization to China's. The economic system has nothing to do with it, both transitioned from communism to capitalism and China is fucking booming. In 2000 the Russian government collected taxes from like 4% of the people who owed them. Capitalism wasn't the problem systematic corruption was.
That said modern Russia is a lot better than Stalin's famines, show trials, and genocides. Putin over the past decade is like a fucking God compared to our corporate christ Obama; and actually fixed shit, arrested bankers, opened trade, etc. Russia recently became the world's #1 exporter of oil, surpassing Saudi Arabia (and Iraq huehuehue).
