If [a different] defendant were caught in so many outright lies, inconsistencies, and fabrications, you'd all turn on him in the blink of an eye and discredit absolutely every aspect of his story. If he can lie about one thing concerning the story, what's preventing you from saying that everything about his account is suspect and cannot be taken at face-value?
Instead, you make excuses for him, adopt his narrative without question, and fill in the gaps with baseless speculation.
