The prosecution was also a joke. So, so many instances of missed opportunities.
Plus, there's the whole issue of the seethingly racist Sanford Police Department during the time of the crime. Any time an adult kills an unarmed minor who was not actively committing a crime, an arrest needs to be made. They played favorites, didn't collect evidence properly, didn't interrogate properly, etc. etc. etc.
But Sanford also has a wonderful history of being disgustingly racist and conservative. Guns are religion in Florida, and the state is more or less governed by the NRA. Sanford in particular clings to its guns like a band of paranoid creeps, so this verdict does not surprise me one bit. If any issue can be manipulated somehow into a "guns rights" issue in the course of discharging a firearm, Sanforders will heed that call of duty.
