After reading this post I spent some time porting, as well as rezzing just to experience this first hand. Let me just say, that we have some ridiculously cheap people on this server. I would say on average I recieved 10pp or below for ports and 20pp for rezzes. For reference, my average tip for a port is about 30-50, and for a rez 75-100 per rez.
Everytime someone asked me how much I charged I told them whatever you feel is fair reasonable for my time and your gain from my services. Apparently people feel that my time and their gain from my services are worth not all that much. One instance I recieved 12pp for two rezzes and me running to highkeep (20-30 minutes of my time). A number of times I was messaged without advertising that I was porting and recieved tips under 7pp. If you're going to bother me for services that I'm not actively advertising and then turn around and snub me with 4pp, that just isn't right in my book.
Don't get me wrong, some characters are lower level and don't have a lot of money, I understand that. But when a L40+ only gives you 15pp for crossing a number of zones to rez them - that is kind of shady in my book.
It wasn't all bad however - a number of people were extremely good tippers (which is something I definitely will remember mind you). While I didn't keep track of every poor tipper, I certainly will remember the good ones and will not hesistate to assist them in the future.
Few side notes - if you snub me hard (like 12pp for 2 rezzes, heals, buffs, and me running accross zones) and I say "No Problem", that is really just me being nice. I really do kind of care because you're effectively telling me that you don't value my time and services very highly. I'm not just being cool about it and want to keep talking to you or toss you a symbol or be your friend. It is a kind of a problem - but just not a big enough one for me to make an issue out of it. Just leave me alone and continue being a cheapskate.
Also "Can you do 'A' Rez" implies 1 (one) singular rez. If you ask me for "A" rez and say you'll give me 50pp and I show up and there are 9 corpses - I'm probably going to be slightly irk'd. Not just because it is going to require a lot more time, but also because often times there are people waiting behind you for services and if I tell them I need to hit one person and will head there way in a couple minutes, I'm making them wait.
Cliffs: Tipping poorly, much like in real life, implies that the person is providing a substandard services and that you do not value their time and effort - thus, people who simply ask for a tip are justified when they recieve a poor tip - because it is essentially the customer telling them that is the value of their product/service.

I entirely agree with you in principle - low tipping is a pet peeve of mine, especially if you find someone who gives incredible service (i.e. waiters who don't let your drink go below half). Hell, i paid some guy 15pp (nearly all I had at level 7) to invis/run with me (he was on the way anyhow) from HH to FP and bind me, and he didn't ask. He just mentioned he was having trouble buying his spells as an enc, and I happened to have some cash on me so decided to give value/value since I would have never made it through the gnolls and orcs without him (no one clearing them both for days).
However, if no prices are put up front and rely on someone else's judgment alone, I never expect people to give me a fair rate because there isn't any contractual connection or true exchange of value. Most people hear "Donations" or "Tips" and think "Optional, therefore cheap." Just how things are.
Maybe "recommended tip X amount for those between Y-Z levels," another tip amount for another level range, etc might be more effective?
