In 1995 or 1996 I went to school with a kid (and during one semester we drank his family's liquor cabinet) whose step-dad had been one of the original creators of Magic but had sold his stake to WotC. Still, they had a whole room in their house stocked with unopened boxes of the cards, from floor to ceiling -- all from various different sets and stuff, I guess. I don't know, because I only dabbled in the early nineties and was more interested in PnP RPGs than card games, but I did steal one of those boxes because I knew it had value.

In one of my least proud moments, I was caught. They were pretty clever about it. The step-dad called my house and pretended to be a detective with the Colorado Springs Police and convinced me that if I just returned the box all would be forgiven. I brought it to school the next day and gave it to his stepson and they revealed their deception to which I replied: Doh.

That's my Magic story.
