I'm obviously biased. That said, in my experience it's just a positive environment. I don't know if you've been to any comicons or anything of the sort, it'd be like that only more specialized so a larger % of the people you encounter there are into the same things that you are so it's very easy to meet someone and strike up a conversation.

Sure, I like cons, but they're mostly about getting drunk and high and chubby girls with a lot of cleavage. I have a secret desire to get good enough at painting to sell pictures of angels and demons and dragons and crap like that, but don't tell anyone at my art school. I like the geek community, science fiction, swords and sorcery. I just don't care for the anime part of anime.
