Is there any way to restore the classic nametags?

Negative. That is displayed by the client.

Is there anything I can do to my own client to get this? I'm pretty sure SoD has the classic nametags.

No idea on that.

But, we neither condone or encourage modification of the client.

SoD uses an older client. I think it's GoD era, maybe PoP.

I don't get it. What's different?

Not even an issue of this. Text is allowed a change in:
Options menu,
General Tab,
Current Font (drop down menu) -- no idea what font type that is, sorry.

If you weren't speaking about the text type on the name, then sorry. I misunderstood the question.

The current client has a black outline on the text. Classic nametags didnt have this and were a solid color :D

SoD's client is titanium plus their custom patcher. Remember they broke away from the eqemu project a long time ago to go their own way.
Have no idea when exactly they broke off from the eqemu svn but it was a good time ago.
Wonder if Dynak still floats around here he could give you timelines and such
