The Stonewall Riots in New York in June 1969 were the symbolic birth of the contemporary lesbian and gay movements, identities and cultural consciousness. The 25th anniversary was celebrated in grand style in the USA in June 1994, with millions marching in New York in celebration, mourning (for those who have died from AIDS), militancy, and to underline the sheer ordinariness of being lesbian or gay.
