how to get a wife started in mmorpg's
HOW?!?!!?!?! :(
seeking any useful advice/suggestions. i am having a hard enough time getting her to sit down to try it. she actually got to level 18 in aion before getting bored of it. but going from an overhauled graphics game to one 10+ years old is having her hesitate. she has already agreed to "try" it, but the fact it's taken her the past week to make a char says just how much she doesn't want to. so i am left with deciding between playing together immediately and holding her hand throughout, which may be boring. OR do i let her wander aimlessly as a newbie for a bit at first and risk her being overwhelmed, like everyone has done before falling in lo... err getting immersed. if you're married to someone who doesn't play, then you can understand my fear of her deciding she doesn't want to play it. if she likes it though, hello EQ every night :D:D:D |
You do realize it takes a glutton for punishment to enjoy all the long treks all over the continents, XP grinding, camping for loot, sitting/medding, etc, right? :) Try to sell her on the social aspect. Don't just run around PL'ing her... start a newb with her, and go find groups. Get her attached to the people, not the game itself. Then she'll be self-driven to keep up with her friends if she enjoys grouping up with them.
But if it's not for her, it's not for her. EQ is designed with lots of time-sinks and to some people it could be incredibly boring, and when it comes down to it, those people would need to get past the "why am I devoting all this time and effort into digital trinkets and 1's and 0's that won't matter?" (i.e. treat it as a fun distraction and not as a hardcore obsession.) |
I'm working on getting my wife into the game also.
What I've done so far is started a pally to play most of the time with out her, and then made an alt to play with her, to hold her hand and walk her thru the noob areas. Ironchef |
Yendor has a pretty good thought on the matter. Get her interested in the people side of it not so much the game side and she will play the game to play with the people.

If that fails, I'd suggest slipping her a nice hypnotic, such as Chloral Hydrate - but watch out for when it wears off! ;) |
well that's what i thought, i tried getting her into wow months ago, figuring it had the population for her to make lots of friends. she played for maybe 2 hours, got level 6 and quit before socializing.
the first thing most of us did that engaged us with strangers in this game, imo, was we had a question or needed help with something. holding someones hand prevents that from happening. with my luck i'll have to resort to paying her to play  |

I would agree that getting her up to level 10 quickly and having her group somewhere would be a good idea. |
