Got up to the part to see kandin firepot in BMM, handed the note to him then hailed him and he makes no mention of 'dont slip on the oil' to which you need to reply 'what oil?' for him to give you the spare gears in order to continue on

That was not part of the original quest. That was modified much later. The actual wizard piece required is Cazic skin, which is a rare drop off of Cazic Thule himself.

ohh so this version needs the skin not the oil, his text did say he needed a 'skin that is dry and brittle"
but all the walk thrus i've read on alla and p99wiki mention the oil you need from the golem.

That's because the wiki cut and pasted Alla which is the updated one, we must go deeper.
