Also, there should NOT be oliphaunts. That's even severer horseshit.

I'll watch it if treebeard is gay.

Don't mind a bit of girl power - similar complaints were levied against Liv Tyler in FOTR but her delivery of "if you want him, come and get him" always bring my tear to my eye (and no, I'm not being snarky here)!

However, part of the draw of LOTR to me is how the stories are of country bumpkin everyman getting over his head in a whimsical adventure but doing their best to do good, even if they take a few missteps on the way.

For this reason, I'm struggling to be drawn in to the new cartoon.

The focus seems to be on the great heroes, figure heads of powerful institutions struggling to maintain their grip on power. The animators also seem to have wanted to have done Battle of Pelinor Fields and other classic scenes, which is fair but makes it feel like maybe the cartoon's own cinematic are unable to stand on their own merit (or at least without echoing live action /cgi sequences we're already familiar with).

I'm more interested in the guy who likes life's simple pleasures of meek existance, but is capable of heroics when pushed.

I'm sure I'll end up watching it eventually, it just doesn't draw me in. Perhaps because I'm not really familiar with what the story will tell or the characters. Honestly, the Dunlendings kinda feel like the more interesting focus - thrown out of their own lands and struggling to get the recognition they seek. It is easy to see how they sided with Saruman's insidious tongue, and I'd like to see focus on that aspect.

Does the film play to that?

Also, anyone else thought this was gonna be a series?

These days movies are series. 90 minute episodes released 1 year apart with post credits cliffhanger.

Elves, giants, orcs, magic, necromancy, gods literally walking the ground.

But women are out of the question?

LOL.

No it's that women being lazily shoved into hastily-written roles due to real world ideological commitments is really annoying and bad, and everyone sees through it. Especially longtime fans of a franchise (including female fans!)

Nobody had a problem with sarah connor being a chick. Or trinity, or uma thurman in kill bill.

Women are fine. Girlpower in my turbonerd elf fantasy is an ill guest.
