Can't boot up, can't change screen res

My boyfriend tried playing recently and his computer gives an error message when he tries to open the exe file. From my research, it seems it's connected to the screen resolution. His laptop (2022, custom with add ons) won't let me change the display res in settings--the option is grayed out. I have done screensharing with Dell etc. and spent >7 hours updating graphics card drivers and reading old forum posts and trying things recommended there (like adding "patchme" to file properties, opening w admin permissions, trying to open w special display settings, etc), but kept getting errors. Has anyone dealt with this recently? He previously was able to change his computer res and says he had to do that to play the game previously.

If its resolution, you can edit the eqclient.ini file and set it to anything you want

[VideoMode]
WindowedWidth=1280
WindowedHeight=720

Is the error "The instruction at 0x029110ce referenced memory at 0xfffffffc. The memory could not be read"?

If so, Kavious's answer is likely correct (see also https://wiki.project1999.com/Tech_Su...not_be_read.22).

This is very close to the error message. I added a screenshot with the exact error. I saw some suggestion similar to this that I thought I did, but the numbers were already correct. I will try again though!!

Ok I edited the eqclient.ini, but am still getting the same error. I tried my computers recommended/current resolution (3840x2160) and 800x600. I change "widthwindowed" and "heightwindowed" to match "windowedwidth" and windowedheight" right? Are there other numbers I should try?

If it helps at all, I also see this different error message when i try to launch the application file

I think this means there's progress; I believe you've solved your first issue, and now have a second (different) one.

(BTW, Those numbers aren't supposed to line up exactly: they're showing where exactly in memory the error occurred, which will be different for everyone. But since you saw a similar message, it's almost certain that your first issue was that.)

As for your new error, it sounds like this: https://www.project1999.com/forums/s...d.php?t=401863

Proposed solutions there:

I got mine to work again, not sure if you've played on here but make sure you're running off a shortcut with patchme on it and admin also put it on win xp sp 2 compatibility. i forgot about all of that, although my main client just errors out so now my UI is destroyed.

... but it also might be as simple as starting with a fresh install, applying the P99 patch, and re-applying your fix to issue #1.

Ok I haven't been launching from a shortcut because he didn't normally open the game that way, but I did create and try one at some point in this process and had the same issues. How does the patch me work exactly? I still get the same error message when I try to open from the windows batch file, but this wsock message comes when I try to launch the application. The youtube video I used to install 1999 in the first place is now private so I have to find those steps again. I don't think I currently have "patchme" anywhere because it didn't seem like it was fixing anything. Do I downlaod these v57 patch files from the main page of the forum? Thanks so much for all your help!!!

This really belongs in a separate thread, but see https://wiki.project1999.com/Getting...ate_a_Shortcut
