Facebook's stealth attack on Google

I find Facebook attacks on Google to be unbelievable. Seems to me the ending of the article sums up what is really happening....

"These companies want our trust. They even want us to hold off strong legislation and allow them to self regulate."

Is government sitting back and letting companies hang themselves? or is there some kind a behind the scenes?
