Returning player with a couple questions.

This weekend I decided to begin playing this fantastic game again. I did some research and decided that my best bet when choosing a class was a Magician. I decided on this class for multiple reasons. The biggest reason out of all was for the fact that I could summon elementals that would assist me in battle. After leveling for a couple hours and getting up to level 7 I feel like my damage is kinda low and I can barely win a fight with a mob that cons as white even with a ele summoned. I was thinking about it and wondered if maybe I should have went with Enchanter, Wizard, or maybe even Bard instead of the Magi. I guess my first question would be is their any really good low level weapon that I should be looking out for and striving to obtain and if there is how do I obtain it? Also if I could buy this weapon or any other pieces of gear with plat is there any way at level 7 I could farm the plat at a okay rate?

Mages are quite powerful, you just have to know what you're doing. Sometimes you require chaining a pet.

For example, there is a bandit camp in GFay. When I was leveling there, I would summon a fire pet and then memorize earth pet on my bar. I would send in the fire pet and watch its health. As it got low, I would summon the earth pet (just make sure your fire pet is gone before the spell casts - you can click pet go away if need be).
Once the earth pet was summoned I would send him on a bandit and I would nuke another one (usually half dead or more from the damage shield). Once dead, I would blow up the one on my pet and send it after the 3rd one.
After they were all dead I would dismiss my pet and get a fire pet again. Once the first respawns you send in the pet and nuke it at about 1/2 health. Do this with the other 2 and the camp will stay broken and you'll get great exp and bronze weapons.

Also. Level 7 is still low to judge power..your in noob gear if any. Anf a even con is a tough fight.

Ust hang in therem at level 20 you will see whats up and fell the power. Lol

at low levels the last level before new spells is usually pretty rough.

When you got lvl 4 your pet was wreckin shop, which is awesome, but then at lvl 7 it's the same pet fighting harder mobs so it gets tough.

As you get higher level, that gap begins to narrow down much more. And honestly, being able to kill an even con mob is something some lvl 7 classes cannot do, so don't get down on yourself for that. Kill blues. they're easier, safer, and faster, which then translates into more xp.

As far as your question about buying a weapon. Don't. at your level save money for spells.

Also, do some research on the forums or wiki for mage guides. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, and there's no shame is doing research on your class and different strategies for success.

Something to consider as a mage is that if your pet does 50% or more damage to a target, you lose half the xp for that target. This doesn't happen if you're grouped. So find groups, make friends, and enjoy the ride that this game can offer.

Also Also, as a caster, you must play the fizzle drinking game. If your spell fizzles, you take a drink. Makes the game much more entertaining.

Absolutely, this. Once you get your next pet at 8 you will have an easier time once again if you use reclaim energy to re-summon pet until you have a white/yellow con pet. You will see this pattern repeat for a while where your pet when you first get it is powerful and then the level before your next pet it starts to feel weak.

I have recently started up a mage and they are very powerful at lower levels but have some quirks about them that you have to accept. Also, if you can group with at least one other person I think that is best. You can manage your mana more efficiently and not worry about the pet stealing all your XP.

Another thing you might do if you can put together a few hundred plat would be to start buying the components for at least one pet focus. I like water pet personally because it seems to have a good mix of DPS and survivability and with with the focus it's a beast. It will make your pet 25% stronger which is a pretty huge upgrade. It will cost you 100p for the stein, maybe 100p for the gem and maybe 50p for the other 2 parts. Good luck!

A mage complaining about not enough DPS? What is wrong with the world? I seem to remember being able to knock out reds in Najena up till lvl 25 or so. Don't give up. It's a very strong and versatile class.

My suggestion is definitely try another class! You're bound to eventually anyways that's the fun of eq.

As for beating a white con, try any other class and you'll find they will be challenged to even win the fight let alone have good damage.
