Client Crash Poll

I was talking on IRC about this issue today and I was wondering how universal it is. I know a ton of people have the issue but it appears that not everyone does; if you don't have the issue, please give a short description of how you're running EQ, what your OS is, whether you're using multiple processors, and that kind of thing. Obviously the most desirable description is if you used to have the issue and no longer do.

The issue is basically that you'll be doing something in-game and then your client will close without provocation. If you're logging the in-game text to a file, you'll see a string not found error at the very end before the crash. This happens to me (and I think everyone who has it) intermittently - sometimes it'll happen twice a day, sometimes not for a couple of weeks - but it can be deadly and GMs are not supposed to rez for it (since learning this I'm no longer gonna /petition when it happens), though GMs sometimes have been nice enough to rez me for it (thanks, bro). I've tried a lot of things to fix it so far and have had no luck; I'm just trying to get a handle on how widespread the problem is.

I've had it happen twice in 30 levels. Both times while in combat but neither time against something tough enough to kill me (thankfully). Certainly not often enough for me to have a clue as to how to reproduce it.

I think i never had this problem. Running EQ on a macook pro, on a windows xp partition via bootcamp. Nvidia geforce something, intel core duo.

I crash when alt+tab'd and my char finishes loading. zone either zoning in to somewhere or loading into game. once the blue bar finishes its crash bandicoot. running super OP machine w/ quad cores, awesome gfx card, 8gb ram blah blah.

I've had crashes sometimes during loading screens, but this isn't the same thing, I don't think; I'm talking about crashes while just casting a spell or fighting something or standing up.

What kind of EQ install do you have? Do you use anything like EQLite, EQPlayNice, etc.?

Nothing else...just followed the setup guide for titanum edition :)

I run EQ in windows95 mode, because this fixed the dual core runspeed issues for me, thats all.

Never had a crash, occasionally had a lockup after zoning, probably due to lag.

Samsung NC10 Netbook, XP, gawd knows what graphics card as it's shared on the mobo.

I've probably been kicked 6 times in 25 levels. 3 times I returned dead.

The last time was last night. I was root/rotting a crag spider in EK, and I was medding when root broke. The spider was under 15%, so he was in run mode. I touched nothing, and it crashed to the desktop. I was still alive when I returned. I'm not sure if I got exp credit for killing the spider, but I was able to loot the corpse when I logged back in.

So apparently it isn't necessarily associated with any combination of key strokes. I had previously assumed that the scroll wheel contributed to it, since I crashed a couple times while using that to check for adds.

I'd love to learn if there is a fix to this.

It seems to acted as a band-aid for a lot of issues... I heard there's something to actually fix the problem in the works, though.
