Brand new to p1999 and EQ
Hail!
Allow myself to introduce myself. I just installed and started to play p1999 and I'm very happy to be here. I'm 28 years old and was just a middle school aged kid when Everquest hit the scene. I was a diehard old school Ultimate Online player who was pretty true to the UO/EQ rivalry. The only time I ever played EQ was for a few moments walking around Halas back in the late 90's, and that's literally the full extent of my abilities in Everquest. Fast forward to present day where I was searching for a casual but nostalgic game (preferably an MMO or RPG) and the lightbulb went off to try the "other" game that I shunned as a youngin' and here I am. That is the short end of it. I'm happy to be here with what seems to be a great active knowledgable community. Any advice on how to best approach the game would be so appreciated. Last night I was stuck in the lake outside of Halas for a good 15 minutes because I didn't know how to get out, AND I had to google how to get buttons from the small hotbar to the big hotbar - so bear with me a bit hehe. As far as play style, I prefer melee classes that can both solo and grab some groups (Warrior/Paladin maybe?) I don't know that I know the game enough to be a "reliable" tank, so is it possible to be just a DPS warrior in groups? Before I get ahead of myself, just saying that I'm certainly looking to exploring this game and discovering what Everquest has to offer and what it, and the p1999 community is all about! Cheers everyone, and I hope to meet some of y'all in game ! |
Welcome! What's your characters in game name?
Man, EQ is definitely exciting and a true nostalgic experience! There is a pretty steep learning curve, but once you get it down, you'll love it! Shoot me a msg in game and I would love to group with you and/or chat about how to play the game. Sashias 16 Paladin :) |
Welcome and well met! I know that many helpful and industrious people have put together guides for new players and posted them on the forums. Here's one that might get you started: http://www.project1999.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=41480
I love reading about players discovering Everquest for the first time. Please look me up in game if you have any questions! |
I remember the UO/EQ rivalry banter that went on in my middle school in those days - made me chuckle! Welcome to the party mate.

Hi there Steak!
There is no DPS oriented tank in Classic EQ. That said, warriors can put out some very respectable numbers with the right gear. In the absence of significant gear investment warriors utterly lack soloability and even then, the option fades with levels. The primary reason for creating a warrior is to serve as the main tank for raids due to a unique 50+ ability that affords them damage mitigation that is vastly superior to that of all other classes. Paladins can solo, are excellent group tanks, but are not DPS oriented. They have many tools at their disposal that makes them good pullers, excellent (arguably the best) aggro managers and decent backup/support healing. The ideal role for a paladin is as a tank in a full group. Solo is possible, but can be painfully slow in the absence of shinificant investment, which only improves the pace to slow ^^ Shadow knights are great tanks (almost as good as Paladins, no bias here ^^), great pullers and ok soloers. Solo is easier than Paladin solo and the ability to feign death offers them an advantage both when pulling for groups and for oopsies while soloing. Like paladins, shadow knights will not be invited to groups as DPS. Rangers are fantastic pullers, decent DPS and can solo and tank if needed. Rangers are best suited to outdoor zones and small groups. Outside of small groups rangers are not generally asked to fill the tank role as proficiency in that role diminishes with level. Rangers also have a decent amount of utility and the semi uniques ability to Track mobs/players. Druids and bards also receive that ability, but no where near the level attainable by a ranger. Monks are interesting because they can tank with no gear, are always invited as DPS and make fantastic pullers. They can solo naked for a while, but like other classes in the absence of gear investment, the ability diminishes with level, though not nearly to the same degree as the other classes above. Monks are generally not recruited as tanks and lack any aggro generating ability aside from their regular attacks. Monks are well suited to all sorts of play and receive a number of useful abilities including feign death, sneak, safe fall and mend (self only 25% hp heal w/ ~6min reuse). I'd roll ranger or monk based on your preferences for flexibility ^^ welcome aboard and good luck! |
Roll Paladin! Be the Holy Tank you were meant to be! Hit me up in game i'll try to help you out a bit.

Sounds like you want to be a rogue, simple melee dps class. Highly sought after for groups. If you want to stay a barbarian they make great rogues too. Send me a tell in game if you need any help or ports to get around the world.

I have to be honest. For people who have never played before, casters are the best way to start. Especially those with pets. At low levels pets do a ton of heavy lifting which really helps you level a lot faster. And most importantly, they require almost no gear, so you can save your plats. Then when you have some money banked, you can buy decent gear for a melee toon.
So necro, mage or enchanter would be my suggestion. |
Just starting up myself. Currently a level 5 cleric named Borian. Hit me up in-game if you want a leveling partner.
