Yet Another Returnee

So I just don't have the free time I did back when I played EQ in 99+

I cannot decide what to play and I know nobody can choose for me...

However as many can attest to... one of the large appeals to EQ was playing with others. So for me a lot of the time my enjoyment in the game was playing a class that was needed.

Though from browsing this forum it seems like there is plenty of every class.

I'm torn from trying something new in my free time or playing something I already played End Game back in the old days.

I have plenty of experience as rogue, bard, cleric. And dabbled a bit in other areas.

Thought maybe I'd try enchanter to do something new this time around, instead of going to old roots.

Anyway...the idea of starting from scratch is daunting, ground up, right?

Any suggestions or insight from the many folks that have been doing Project 1999 much longer than I just starting ? :)

Thank you,

Mteni !

I just started, but here's my background and advice:

I coach college football, high school track and field, work full time, have two kids and a woman at home to attend to. Time isn't something I'm swimming in. When I first got p99, I knew I wanted to play a warrior. It's just what I want to play. But as I was playing him, I realized that soon I was going to need to have a major gear upgrade to be able to solo and not rely on grouping all the time given the amount of time I typically play.

So, I re-rolled as a necro. I'll be leveling him in order to get gear to play my warrior. I can solo the necro in whatever time I do have time to play, and in time I'll be able to play the warrior solo in some circumstances as long as I keep him over geared. End game I'll need to rely on a group (and close to it) but I'll at least be able to move forward.

So my recommendation is to play a class that can solo well at first and not group reliant: Enchanter, necro, wizard, mage, druid, shaman, bard in no particular order. Level them and then gear up whatever class you truly want to play. It's really going about it backwards, but it's almost necessary if you have a time crunch.

Oh forgot to add: you can still group if you have time, especial if you play an enchanter or shaman.

http://wiki.project1999.com - all kinds of guides and information on there to help you make an informed choice :)

If your time is limited or short, consider a class that can solo...and that does include clerics ;)

I tend to disagree with this, I'd much rather play what I wanted to play out the gate then play a "starter" class to fund my real character later.

If you have limited play time anyway then down time and/or efficiency shouldn't be something to worry about. Any class can solo, it just depends on how much time sitting on your butt you're willing to handle.

It's pretty dangerous soloing as most melee unless you are geared decently. Bards don't count though.

I rolled a necro as my money maker first before I started my warrior and haven't regretted it. Gimped tanks don't do very well.

I can respect this point of view. But, to be honest, a tank with no gear is difficult to play. Even for groups. A warrior can't hold agro as well with no gear. Which means if a group has a choice between a fresh warrior, a twinked warrior, a fresh SK or a fresh Pally, they'd likely choose the twink warrior one, fresh SK/Paly next and then the ungeared warrior.

On a fresh server, a fresh warrior is fine. There's no other choice and everyone is kind of lagging. But on a server this old with twinks running rampant, it's a lot tougher sledding.

But, if someone really wants to JUST play that one class and try to make it work, more power to them. It's just going to be more difficult and frustrating.

Thanks for all the insight and advice :)

I think I will continue with the enchanter, even though it seems like they are everywhere 0.o

A lot of my enjoyment in the game comes from playing what is needed. Whether it's a certain dps, a healer, puller, or tank. Love to play my class well, and fit the roles that keep a group going strong.

I agree with that also. It is a LONG way to 60 and you will be the one playing it. So pick what you like not what sort of fits in. And you are allowed to have more than one character and account on here. :D

Yes I know, but my greatest enjoyment in all my years of EQ and any other MMO has been to play a role that people need/want. Especially at the top. Usually quite happy to play a class that most others don't like to. Whether it be the tank, the healer, the crowd control, or the puller. Of course a good dps is sometimes hard to come by, but I know it's also easy to say all classes are needed.... depending on how well the player is.

Ah well, just rambling here, since I know the server has been around a while, and I have a long way to go as Classic takes a lot of work to get there ;) I'm in no rush, just enjoy to fill in what's needed, rather than dime a dozen.
