Switching to Intel from AMD, HALP!
I just bought a G TX 970 and I am wanting to replace my fx 6300 and current mobo with Intel gear. So I have looked a little bit and I want an i5 but not sure which are OC capable. I also don't know much about mobos but I do know I will never use more than one gpu so SLI mobos are not being considered unless I have to But i do for sure want to overclock Thanks for any information! Google is so overwhelming.
Looking to spend about 300, no more than 400 at very most |
i5-****K (the K = OC possible)

Dunno about motherboards but you want an i5 4690k.

CPU infoz
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ck,3106-6.html Mobo infoz http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...oard,3902.html Last couple of systems I built I used gigabyte mobo's. No complaints. |
Also as a note, if you can wait, the new Intel chipset and CPUs will be out 2015-Q4/2016-Q1 I believe. New chipset will open up usage of DDR4 RAM and the newer CPUs.
If you can't wait, it's not that big of a jump to worry about for a few years unless you want to spend a ton of money to have the latest. I'm still running the i5 2K series just fine on everything. I build my systems on a 4-6 year replace schedule. I figure I'll build a new system summer/fall of 2016. |
$400 for CPU + MOBO? Here's what I'm currently running...
CPU (i5-4690k): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-372-_-Product Motherboard: The second one (MSI brand) is $10 more but I find it more aesthetically pleasing. It's also the mobo I'm using. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-709-_-Product http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-770-_-Product |
You're prolly gonna want an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan on overclocking that 4690k; decent ones range in price from about $50 to $100+
Lemme know what case you have for measurements and I'll give you a few cooler options. I'm running my 4690k with a Noctua NH-D14 cooler. It's pretty huge and comes with two fans on it, yet it's so effective that I removed BOTH fans for 100% silent operation and it keeps my CPU temps more than low enough |

Will the overclocking show enhanced graphics and quicker load times? A guy at work today made it seem if I wasn't going to SLI then he didnt get why I want to overclock and now come to think about it, I don't really know why either. I don't know jack about OC. Never had a system that could do it. Does it make games look even better or perform better? I would assume both or one of the two.
I just really want to play games with smooth frames and some kind of quality to its visuals |
And thanks for the links man, when I measure my case I'll let ya Know. the case is from like 01' or some non sense. I got it when the neon lights first started showing up in PC builds a long while ago, lol.
