Returning Player login

Hello ~ I am returning to EQ after a year long break and when I log on and get to the character select screen I get the message that my spell file needs to be updated and to check the Project 1999 website. Not sure what I need to do next - can anyone help with this? Thanks!

You'll need to patch your EQ install folder with these files. Welcome back!

jarshale~

Thank you for responding so quickly. As I am a computer illiterate, can you please tell me how to patch my install folder? I'm afraid I'll make a mess of things without knowing what I'm doing....

Thanks again - can't wait to start playing again!

Just unzip it to your install folder by double clicking on the file, then choosing your current install location, say yes to all. If you are really worried about messing it up you could right click on your install folder click copy and just make a backup of it by pasting the copy somewhere.

If you are unable to unzip the file report back and someone can get you set up with an un-zip program

Hi Madbad - I have a folder called "EverQuest" that has all the EQ1 folders and files in it (like ActorEffects, Atlas, AudioTriggers, backup, etc.) - Is that my install folder?

I did copy and paste that entire folder to my desktop before trying anything. I then unzipped the new patch folder and copied everything to my EQ folder - saying yes to everything. When I try and logon to EQ I get the message that there is a file called DSETUP.dll missing (I saw that got quarantined in my virus filter.)

Now I'm not sure what to do. Should I uninstall everything and reinstall the game fresh?

Thank you SO MUCH for your help and patience.

You will need to go into your anti virus and make a exemption for the file. Then re extract the files to from the patch zip and you should be good.

If you do not do this your antivirus will likely delete it every time you launch EQ and if it is particularly vigilant every start up. AdAware actually did this to me.

Do you think it's safe to do that even though Symantec says the risk for that file is "TrojanGen.SMH.2" (whatever that is, sounds bad)?

Yes, it's safe. The dev team put in some anti-cheat code that, by it's very nature (it's code that watches for things outside EQ) looks like a virus to virus scanners (because viruses often try to affect code outside of the code they've infected). But the key phrase there is "looks like"; if it was a real virus this forum would be full of thousands of people yelling at Nilbog ;)

*EDIT*
Or maybe Nilbog is just playing the long game, and he wants us all to think it's benign so that someday he can take over all our computers. I doubt it, but it's possible: that's just the risk you have to take to play 100% free awesome classic EQ.

Sounds like a risk worth taking :D
Thanks to all who helped!
