Completely New EQ player. Hi, I like this game.
Hello all. Simple backstory, I played Runescape for too long than I care to admit, took a break from MMOs, tried to get back into them with GW and EQ from steam, but found them too "Themeparky" (they were good games nonetheless, just not for me [specifically the Plane of Knowledge on the new EQ killed it for me]).
I download P99 before the weekend and played it A LOT. I'm currently a level 5 Dwarven Cleric, circling between random exploration and wiki-fueled leveling over at freeport (the boat ride was fun, I love how the world feels so massive because of something so simple). I really enjoy this game and it's community. I think I'll stick around for a while :). I've explored the new player section on the wiki and some other random things, but any general tips would be appreciated! Also, sorry I can't provide Chips/Scalps/etc. in bulk when I trade :p |

If you're tradeskilling, use Control + Leftclick. Since you're a cleric, always cast your heals and spells after you get hit by the 'meditate tick.' Use Stun / Force / Holy Might spells -- especially to save friendly Casters and Weak Melee. Most of the time it can be much more effective than a reactive heal.
Clerics are actually a dime a dozen, so if you plan to play the 'snob cleric' people will be more than happy to kick you out of the group and get someone more down to earth. And yes, this actually needs to be said, specifically for the 'typical cleric player.' |
He is brand new, He will not have bad cleric traits.
Weclome to the Server! It's a blast, Classic EQ is amazing! There is a reason this game brings thousands of players back to play it. Honestly I feel like there would be thousands more if there was an easy way to box it up and sell it. =D Don't be greedy, keep your group buffed, sit and med so you have mana for heals for your group. More importantly just ask a lot of questions and have fun. Get that WIKI link and forums Favorited in your browser as well! =) From one Dwarven Cleric to another... Glad to see you here and stick with your main character so you can enjoy others! EQ can be dangerous when you start alts. |
Make sure to have someone cast bind affinity on you at Freeport if you plan to stay there to level. It will save you the boat ride on death ^^ At L14 you can cast it on yourself anywhere to change your revive point to that location.
If you go without drink for too long you will not regenerate mana. Make sure to train the meditate skill at 8 (or maybe it's 9) when you get it. Welcome and good luck! |
You came to the right place if you felt the newer mmos were too "themeparky". Best thing you can do right now is make friends and get lost exploring the vast continents to learn your way around. Wiki maps will help you with this. It's a good idea to run along the walls of a zone. Also, make sure to keep your alteration skills capped so you never miss a beat while healing. Good luck to ya.

My one piece of advice for grouping.
You have a limited healing throughput over a long period of time due to how much mana you regain meditating. There is no way YOU can increase this. However there are other classes that can such as Bard and Enchanter. That said, it doesn't matter if you sit at 20% mana or 80% mana - you will have the same mana regen per tick. As long as you are not sitting at 100% mana you are not 'wasting' mana. However if you are at 20% and your group gets a bad pull then people will likely start dying. You have much better chances if you're at 80%. Obviously this is not always practical, but try and get in the habit of not healing someone in a non-emergency situation if you are below X% mana. I personally use 60-70% mana. I see a lot of new casters fall prey to this, especially wizards/mages. Having all the casters above 50-60% mana on a bad pull can mean the difference between a wipe or not. |
