I'm responsible for my own safety as much as I possibly can be and I think everyone need to have that attitude. Most bad situations can be completely avoided if people used common sense (for example, don't talk shit and pick fights with people, to refer to the posted article).
To go into it a little further here's a list of some basic rules of mine (mostly stuff women need to worry about more, obviously, but still useful to everyone):
*
Don't flip people off when they drive like an asshole. Otherwise known as: never instigate fights with people over stupid bullshit. You never know who you're dealing with. (I had to learn that one the hard way when I was confronted and physically threatened after flipping off an idiot on the road who was acting like a dick; Me, a mother with a toddler in the car. That was dumb as fuck and could have ended really badly.)
*
Always avoid dark, sparsely populated parking garages. In a normal lot park in well-lit areas with other people around.
*
Always be aware of surroundings and keep eyes on potential threats. (Criminals are less likely to target you if you don't come across as an easy victim.)
*
Buy a gun, learn how to use it and store it responsibly. (It's dumb to expect that cops would arrive in time to save me if, let's say, my house was broken into at 3:00 am. Lol if I was a burglar and heard the very distinct sound of someone with a shotgun racking the slide I'd shit myself and gtfo quickly.)
*
Never let them get you from point A to point B in an abduction attempt. I would rather die fighting instead. Most of the time, no, they won't let you go later. Criminals and psychopaths will lie their asses off to get you to go quietly. (Kids need to know this, especially. Kick, scream, bite, go limp (<----chubby kid strategy :D), yell "this isn't my dad", etc. Goes hand in hand with teaching kids to be polite but never blindly trust authority figures, which for children is virtually any adult.) If anyone is aware of who
Westley Allan Dodd was, the way the last kid he tried to snatch handled himself saved his own life.
There's much more to remaining safe in the world but the most obvious strategy is to use your head and adopt an attitude of prevention by being more responsible for yourself.
