I mean yes, there probably are more people online due to the holidays.
However, a server repop is a definite independent variable that is going to skew the data of how many people are logging on. When there is a server repop, every guild sends out their batphones for people to log on. Certainly this will increase the population and skew the data somewhat since the server is not in the regular state it usually is.
Furthermore, it's possible that TMO being raid suspended might also have an effect on the population. Less people from their guild will likely be logging in for a server repop, and some of their characters are banned and cannot log in. However, it is hard to say whether or not them being banned may cause more members of other guilds to log in for a server repop.
Last, have recent staff decisions or player decisions to change the raiding scene had an impact on the population?
There are definitely a lot of independent variables that may be affecting population tonight; none of these variables are easily able to controlled in measurement to determine how they might increase or decrease the population or, furthermore, cause outliers in population data.
