Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were also in the new Star Wars, but only long enough to be deconstructed and discarded in favor of more 'culturally appropriate' heroes.
I suspect Picard will ultimately suffer the same fate, except they'll drag it out over the course of a few seasons. Based on what Patrick Stewart has said in interviews, the whole series is going to be an outlet for ham-fisted Orange-Man-Bad-style political propaganda with no shades of grey whatsoever.
If you're interested in watching a science fiction series with nuance and depth, go watch some reruns of Babylon 5.
