I am going through this myself now. I quit playing WoW some time last year (not sure when, but it was 2009 definitely). I was messing around looking at armory, and noticed one of my characters had picked up an achievement on 4/15/2010. I also noticed my main seems to only have about half of his gear. :/ I stil haven't re-subbed, so no idea what else has been done to my characters.

What gets me is that I use good passwords- they are random character and number sequences that have nothing to do with anything. I don't get how someone could hack my account.

I also got a notification that my account was hacked around the same time. I also found out my account is locked. I sent a webform email asking about it, but still haven't heard back.

Its very easy to get a ban from any number of games / servers for tiny teeny things to really big things.

First, the OP brought up the ban. Does it really have any relevance to his future in project1999? I doubt it. However, the OP bringing it up gives more than enough reason for people to question it in my book.

Second, you really have to work at it to get a perma ban from WOW. You can do a fuckton of stupid "minor" things and you will constantly a slap on the wrist. You will rarely see an out right "ban" for something trivial and generally it has justification.
