I would say so. The hard "er" at the end makes the speaker appear to be ignorant and stuck in the 1950 or earlier era. If your skin is on the lighter side of the spectrum I would advise against either word honestly.

I don't think of a fag as someone gay necessarily. In prison a fag is like the little bitch nobody wants anything to do with. When I call someone a fag it is because of their shitty character or whatever, not their sexual orientation. It's just a fucking word anyways - like so many others, it needs to be gotten over.
