Just seems like a silly thing to openly allow is all.

Agreed.

A level 50 that just asks for a name change? I don't usually allow it.

Isildur ---> Bowjob.

This issue has come up a number of times, with the OP always operating under the same assumption that getting a character renamed is just handed out willy nilly by GMs enthusiastic to help you transition your newly purchased 50 Mage. Has anyone ever bothered to find out if that's how it actually works? If anyone that's actually successfully filed a petition for a voluntary name change (NOT a case where your name was offensive/reported) and had it done can chime in.

Until then, I can say that personally, I've put in name change for my Shaman to something as innocuous as an "h" added to the end of his name like 3-4 months ago and nothing happened. I'm pretty sure that nobody is going to change your name at the drop of a hat like you guys make it sound. As far as I know, name change request petitions are almost never granted without a compelling reason (i.e. your name was reported and a GM comes in and changes your name). If anyone has any other experiences, please prove me wrong.

Besides, it seems like the selling of characters just adds to everything that's wrong with the server.

Level a solo class quickly to 50, farm plat/drops, twink/PL/buy an alt for main.

Why encourage more of it?

I don't think name changes should be allowed, period. GMs have enough on their plates as it is, let alone have to deal with bullshit like IP exemptions (My "wife" wants to play) and raid babysitting. The only reason they should change someones name is if its offensive.

This would also be the classic rule. Another classic rule would be not allowing characters to be sold for platinum.

Yes. And I don't see why it has to be "prevent anonymity and aesthetic changes or allow both."

Should just put a separate sub-forum, name changes, with locked threads: X's name was changed to Y.

Would take like 15 seconds a name change to type that, or it could probably be set up to be automated.

Can someone give me a legitimate reason why this isn't a good idea? I'm probably going to have my monk and mage's names changed because they're hard as hell to say on vent and I plain don't like my monk's name, but I don't think I have a bad rep with anyone. I'd love it if I would be saved the trouble of making sure everyone could still contact me, in fact.

Why is it better to disallow name changes than to remove the anonymity?

sounds like a good idea to me as well
