so you tried to log on, got 1018, asked sum1 to /who u, u not on, then u got on?

That is correct, however I would not consider this to be a fix. It is more coincidence I think.

Also, with regards to the theories of logging in to different toons without logging out to server select, its not that. Just played my ranger last night and today again I've got 1018. I understand that these servers are provided to us free, but given how long 1018 seems to have been going on you would think some effort might have been put towards a fix. It is a bit draining to not know whether or not I'm going to have access to a character from day to day.

All this said, for any guide/gm/dev reading, I am a software engineer by occupation and computer scientist by education and am more than willing to look in to the 1018 issue.

Things I think I know:
It's account related. My first account was plagued with this error - two weeks of constant 1018 errors. I re-created (new user ID, new email, new account log, new passwords at EQEmulator.org) and I have never had the 1018 error with the new account. I log on everyday. That can't be a coincidence. Others here are convinced it is account related also, and persuaded me to re-create.

Information I think may relevant, but not certain: The errors on my account started after I unintentionally left my character in game overnight. I logged out when I noticed, then a few hours later received my first 1018 error when attempting to log back in.

P99 had stated firmly they can not solve this issue in these quote:

The answer from my original petition regarding this issue:

So please don't petition for it ;)

On March 9th, 2010, it appears P99 they attempted to solve the issue without success as the patch change was deleted.

Thank you for the info Lyra. To make a W.A.G, I suspect the Feb 14 2010 patch may be the culprit and that something there is causing a false positive for having an 'active character'. Just speculation though.

This is definiltely account related. My son and I have a few accounts and this only happens on one of them. The only way I can get in is to reset my password on EQEMU logon account and after a few minutes I can get in.

pyrese 03-18-2013 11:33 AM

Thanks porigromus! I'll give that a try the next time 1018 occurs for me and update here.

This is interesting. I couldn't find the quote while I was writing up my summation, but I remembered someone writing P99 blames EQEMU and EQEMU claims they are not to blame because this issue does not happen with the other servers.

There has been some back and forth on whose fault it is, but as the default implementation of the server on EQEmu never returns an OP_CharacterStillInZone (which is what I think triggers 1018 client side) and that the issue arose again after the February 14th, 2010 patch, I would lean towards an erroneous match of conditions that the p99 staff desired for the *fix* against people plugging. (no offense meant to the staff).

If what porigromus posted IS in fact a work around, that would lead me to believe that the account info change is triggering some sort of reset for the state of an account in the p99 database. (Not confirmed, but I think each of the world servers keeps a hash of each accounts pw. I'll check the default EQemu server implementation later).

I've gotten in the three times I reset EQEmu/LS "shortly" after, within 30-60 minutes. It may have cleared up faster, but I generally go do other stuff when I see 1018 pop up.

May be coincidental, but this may finally be a workaround, despite being nothing resembling a fix.

I've tried all other guesses/suggestions with absolutely no luck, even the really weird ones that sound like someone made them up in a choose your own adventure book. This is the only thing that's had me getting in after, and I'm not even convinced it's not a coincidence.

F 1018.

Edit: Engrish

Neither the file removal nor changing of my LS password helped.
