I imagine since Velious is a high lvl playground, the old world and Kunark hold importance for lowbie levelling, but beyond that are they abandoned? Do old world/Kunark high lvl dungeons and items become ghost towns/unwanted?

Unfortunately the old world and Kunark will will become a ghost towns once Velious is released, unless of course there's a dragon that needs to be killed.
As it is now they are only sparsely populated.

Wait, so you're saying people will stop coming to the server, making alts etc come Velious? You can't level up low/mid level toons in Velious I thought

One of the staff (believe it was Ambrotos) said 900 - 1000 different people log into the server in an average 24 hour period a month or two ago. In Velious those numbers will rise, I can't imagine the old world and Kunark being THAT dead...

Unfortunately it's already that dead. With new higher level content I imagine less people playing lower level alts and more people having fun in Velious... hence even deader old world zones than what we're seeing now

Think about yourself. Would you rather go experience new (new on this server) content, aka Velious, or continue to see the same old content (classic and Kunark) again and again and again
And even if there are new people,,, with no one to group with in the newbie zones it gets pretty darn hard to keep yourself interested in the leveling up

Well that doesn't bode well for the health of the server!

I just rolled a new character, and I still see quite a good number of people in Oasis and such. It's hard to find a group atm, but i'm still pretty low.

I doubt Velious will be fully fleshed out a year after release, but when he does roll back the server you can grab your true name at long last!

this game you are playing is over 15 years old....
i know shards (emu servers) of AO that is over 20 years old with a healthy population, wow emulators with old content with 1k player base, and yes this server will still have a healthy population come and after vel.
I have a bard sitting at 50 i dont feel like playing till late in vel when hybrid xp is removed. Hes waiting for me to come back to at some point if the server is still up. Im sure you will have nerds to play with in a year or 2.
Ive been on this server for almost 3 years come january 2013... 3 years, and people 3 months into the server were worrying about a healthy pop.
chill out log in slay a dragon have a ale
