View Full Version : New LoL Patch
Was wondering if any LoL players around here wanted to weigh in with their thoughts on the huge changes to the game in the most recent patch: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/preseason-3-patch-notes
I like a lot of these, but some of them I have mixed feelings on. As someone who finds himself playing support a lot (though my first choice is top), I like the increased GP/10 across the board and the rechargeable sentries - it'll be nice to have more items to help out my team and customize my character. And as someone who finds it incredibly boring that everyone goes boots + health potions to start off with and has flash + usually ignite for their spells, I really like the nerf to boots, flash, and ignite: hopefully that will introduce more variation in early builds.
But as someone who occasionally jungled Dr. Mundo and had an enjoyable time of it, I'm pretty leery of these jungle changes. I don't know what exactly the reasoning behind them is - I feel like being able to jungle with a lot of different characters is a lot of fun (not that Mundo himself is necessarily going to no longer be viable jungle), and it just seems like it will be a lot harder to jungle early-game now, with the buffed monsters and the elimination (?) of leashing (and early-game jungling was already taxing, where you had to use five potions in the span of a couple of minutes and run back to base). Moreover, these new items that specifically boost damage against minions seem like a cop-out. It reminds me of these ridiculous stats in newer versions of WoW like "PVP power": instead of having people think about what their goal is (e.g. jungling) and what general stats they should boost to achieve that goal (e.g. armor or armor penetration, which they can put to use against other players later), they just get some item specifically for jungling that has no use outside of it. There is nothing interesting about just having an item that says "buy me for jungling!" - it is the death of thoughtful character customization.
I was wondering if any LoL players had some input.

After a quick review, it looks like they want to cut down snowballing.
The jungle has always been a issue. They can't seem to get it right or they don't know what direction they want to take it.

So you mean like junglers becoming too powerful as the game went on and dominating everything? Was this a big issue season 2? Having only played non-ranked games (level 27 currently) my experience was that this was rare, but maybe I wasn't paying attention or it was a bigger issue in high-level play? It seemed to me as though jungling didn't yield as much gold as, say, soloing top, so you wouldn't become as powerful. Again, though, my experience with jungling is limited.

These are separate thoughts.
The first part of the patch notes suggest that the ambient gold increase is going up, while monster gold gain is going down. I believe this (along with the champion kill gold change) has to do with with snowballing, but like I said, I haven't researched this except your link. There could be entirely different reasons, this is just the first thing that comes to mind.
Separately, the jungle has always been a issue from a design standpoint. They cant figure out how to balance it properly or not sure what direction to take it. It looks like, again from your link, that they dumbed down the jungle too much from the original revamp and they want to bring some difficulty back into the role.
Side note: LoL is almost unplayable now (at least as a casual-competetive player) I usually stick to ARAM because there's way too many scrubs playing to have any fun.

Enjoying the new patch, I love all the new items and the meta shift. Bruisers are even beastlier which would of made me angry in the past, so I started playing them and now love it.

I followed the release of DoTA2 closely, but never played DOTA1. My main gripe (and what leagues does really well) is it's hard to understand whats happening in DOTA (and I'm sure it's easier to understand whats going on once you've played a lot) but for example, I can, at anytime, watch a stream or a friend playing League of Legends and instantly understand what is happening, who's winning and what the outcome of the game will probably be. I can explain whats happening to a friend or my girl and they can instantly relate because they can see it transpiring on the screen.
That aside, it looks like a great game with some real depth and of course, with the fact that it isn't outright free, I don't have to deal with xboxkiddies that moved to LoL :/

BURDEN OF KNOWLEDGE
Dota2 will be free, it's just in "closed" beta right now. No having to pay for heroes, none of that jazz. You could probably hit up another Dota2 player for a beta invite, they tossed out keys like candy a month or so ago.

One of the earlier posts got it down: the jungle was made harder so snowballing would be made more difficult. Jungle is one of my favorite roles and in ranked I believe I've only lost once on a shyvana jungle and maybe twice on udyr. With the jungle being so easy for certain champions, you could steal red, get your blue, do the mini camps, get your red, and be ganking mid at lvl 3 when they're still 2. The camps were such a joke that if you get boots 5, ghost, and bear on udyr you can do all of your camps to stay up on lvls while having constant lane presence across the board. Excited to see what these changes will do to make the jungler have not such an easy experience

Like anything else it takes practice... jungling can be one of the funnest roles! Picking the time to go and strike at unwary laners is more fun than it looks. I prefer to be on the ganking side than playing the first 20 minutes worrying where the hell Shaco is.
That said, I haven't played in ages mainly due to RL as well as a deteriorating laptop and no funds to buy/build a decent gaming PC :(
They've got to get on top of the shit community though... so many trolls, so many kids :/

Shit community is a real issue but they're making some strides. Of course there's the reporting and tribunal system, where you can report people for verbal abuse or negative attitude and if it's legit, they can get suspended or banned (I think bans come if it keeps happening). I think that this helps filter out more assholes at higher levels since someone who talks shit a lot will finally get what's coming to them after several reports, i.e. it's more likely they'll get canned at level 30 than at level 5. A professional tournament player even got banned recently for talking shit all the time, which sets a good example.
There's also an option (on by default) to not show all-chat by the enemy team. Of course most of the trash talking in LoL comes from your own team, so this is not that useful.
They've also, a couple months ago, implemented an 'honor' system where you can upvote people you liked playing with (there are safeguards against just upvoting your friend all the time), so now there's additional incentive to be nice - once your honor reaches a certain point you get a little banner in champion select showing that you're a cool dude.

I used to make 15 tribunal cases for easy IPs part of my day. The truth is you're wading through 50% of cases where people just report for the sake of it. You can't see the action where there's a load of feeding, you just see the end stats, items, and the chat log.
Overall, I always tried to be nice even with someone saying "die of cancer noob" and related shit... I guess "classic" EQ community never leaves some of us :)
Honor system sounds promising, hope that works out.

I'm using Dorans more just because they almost doubled the price on Scepter with no real advantage.
80 health, 10 damage, and a 5 hp on auto attack that stacks
yes please

Yeah ive just been going double dorans if i'm looking to go IE first.
If I'm going BT first then 1 dorans and vamp will do.

Played one game against bots last night, everything is changed, said fuck this, logged into EQ. Sad day.
Gotta say i hadn't played in a long time....and that's mainly because this patch is what they just kept promising over and over nad over again.
All the new items are fantastic -- aegis and QSS upgrades are great.
But most of it is old hat -- shit from dota that, while certainly helps LOL in the "variety" dept, still isn't anything new and "unique feeling" in the way LOL generally STRIVES (or ... once strived) to be.
It amazes me that I actually wanted to play tonight after work, and I login just now to see the same old message "we know pvp.net is experiencing problems" blah blah blah. What amazes me, though, it that after all this time and money, they're still having these FUCKING BASIC technical problems.
Holy shit .... is the chat interface REALLY still broken, and disconnects every couple days for an undetermined amount of time?
I mean seriously.....you can't get a 90% reliable chat system? You should have abandoned the adobe client a long time ago.
I think you just got unlucky - chat failures are pretty rare. Only seen chat go down once or twice in all the time I've played, and I'm level 27.
