So my university roommate is nice enough but inconsiderate and doesn't respect boundaries. Does anyone have suggestions to be able to tell if my room has been entered while I am away?

Get one of the newer webcam that triggers and event on motion and then emails your smart phone. Then you can even see who it is via the smart phone app.

Take a single strand of hair and secure it between the latch bolt and the strike plate. Have it so you can see it(but only if you are looking for it) when you are looking at the door from outside your room. If the door opens, the strand of hair will be blown away so all you have to do is make sure the hair is still intact when you come back. Make sure your roommate doesn't see you trying to secure the hair though as it would be an awkward conversation and he would just replace the hair. :D

You obviously have a computer (and probably a laptop if you're at college), use the built in webcam. Or buy one if your computer is ancient and doesn't have one already in it.

I used to do that exact thing when maintenance would come do stuff at my apartment when I wasn't there because they were shady as fuck. Caught them stealing a pack of batteries and several pieces of flatware.

lol its easier then all this

take a piece of string and tap it above your door make sure it falls on the inside when you leave then if they come in it will fall on the outside

also put a /stuff animal something small and moveable if the door is opened it will move the object

buy a deer camera :P set it up in your room facing the door any movement triggers the camera check its usb drive when you get home :D

Or you could just hire a midget, dress it in a teddy bear costume and sit in your room all day?

I like it!

Also, you could rig up some laser triggered alarm system that causes a very load siren to sound and the only way to shut off the siren is if you enter a passcode or something so your roommate won't be able to shut it off. It will not only tell you if your roommate entered your room, but he probably won't be wanting to go into your room again when you leave. :D

You could rub your feces all over the doorknob and then check for fingerprints when you get home. If the prints aren't yours, you've been trespassed upon.

Or you could rig the front door to drop a tub of hot peanut butter on your room mate's head and then pull open a cage that holds a half dozen hungry rabid chimpanzees?

Does the fact that people have tried similar things to this on me but I noticed and fixed the stuff when I left the room make me... well I don't know. What does it make me?

This is probably the best suggestion you are going to get. You also shouldn't stop with just the door. Smear feces over your cookware, clothes, towels, anything of yours you think your roommate is using unjustly. You will catch him red handed!

shotgun
string
2 C-clamps
and a big "fuck you" poster

If there is a dead body and blood everywhere when you get back, someone entered your room.

In the beginning of this thread i was going to suggest this, but then I imagine the lawsuit wouldn't be too fun. I would grab a bunch of rusty nails, nail it through a piece of plywood and put it behind your door on the floor.

Tamper Evident Counter Espionage Trap
by Hasbinbad

A small piece of tin foil will bend easily and not return to it's unbent shape.

You can draw a template of a complex hard to duplicate shape, and cut it out of the foil VERY CAREFULLY. The more unbent the foil is, the better tamper-evident trap you can set.

Then tape the foil in such a way that it will bend when the door opens.

Even if the thief knows about the trap, when they go to try and replicate the foil, it will be difficult, and you will have the exact template shape to tell you whether or not it's a fake.

Also, you can use hot glue instead of tape and acrylic paint the same color as some part of your door to make the trap even less noticeable.

I have also used wax seals to great effect. You don't need much wax, and you can use any unique object (such as a piece of jewelry) to give you a recognizable impression.

Hasbinlulz

Important to seal the wax to each surface and make the bridge flimsier than the stick.. it's something you have to fool with, but it's much less noticeable than tape/hair.

Can you put in a deadbolt lock? If so problem solved, lock it up when you leave.
