Trying to get a friend to play, but he insists on having a well geared character from day 1. Otherwise, he didn't specify much preference besides slightly favouring a melee class
Thoughts? Thanks in advance

it doesnt sound like your friend will stay very long on the server with that mentality tbh, but a fungi tunic sounds like something you should get

fungi tunic plus a decent melee weapon should do the trick, would be good for any melee class or a shaman
if he plays a rogue you can get the epic MQ for 30-40k

Fully? Anything but melee, honestly. Enchanters can pick up a fantastic set of hp / charisma pieces barring uber expensive pieces (NOS, IP, mana robe, bcg, etc etc). Shaman will have a markedly worse experience without a fungi, but if you can buy a fungi / jbb / pre-46 weapon (GFG a good choice).
Rogue is somewhat of an option, epic being your primary weapon / haste, CSS being a cheap offhand...
What i'm trying to say is, avoid pal / sk / monk / war.

Well you can get a great set of int/wis caster gear for 10-20k obviously. Casters also level a lot faster and easier than melee anyway.
If he has his heart set on a melee get him a FBSS+Fungi (50k) and then go cheap on everything else. Contrary to what Heallun said I think a warrior with FBSS+Fungi+Lamentations/Staff of Battle+Crafted/other cheap crap is going to be very effective up to 40+ without any upgrades. For a monk substitute the Lamentations with a IFS or a Wu's Quivering Staff if you are really cheap.

This x100
50k will get you a fungi so I'd say you can gear anything well for 50k.

With 50k....
You could gear a Monk. That's my melee choice, FD allows you to solo more safely.
With patience, I think you could score:
Fungi Tunic
Jade Mace and Knuckle Dusters
2x 5/55 Rings
Full Wu's Armor
That's a GREAT start.

Your friend is going to be full of fail if his first eq experience starts out with 50k in gear. Let him suck it up for awhile with starting gear, let him learn the game as he should, and then maybe later toss him a bone if he sticks it out.
Dropping 50k on a first time EQ player is setting them up for failure.

Getting the feeling this is the wise course of action from player response
Thanks for the feedback all

Ya..... If your friend insists on having best gear day 1, he is not someone worth investing into. Part of this game is getting drawn back into the immersion and building your shit up piece by peice. I guarantee he wont be around very long if you uber twink him out. He will have no pride or care for his character.

Yeah, if you start out with uber ass gear not much to look forward to me thinks.

Then again, as a new player, is he even going to know the difference between 1k of gear and 50k of gear? Toss him a reasonable weapon and some jewelry/armor, so he feels like he's not starting out with rags if that is what he needs to feel motivated to play. Either he gets hooked or he doesn't.

Bard it up, all you need is instruments first 50 lvls. Like 3k will get you all the lambent ya need and then some. 10-15k will get ya most of the singing steel clickies.

I would go bard as well can get a selos drum for prob like 15k full lambent or if he follows tunare Mystic Koada'l stuff for say another 10-12k thats 27k for a fully geared bard with best drum in the game.. and still have 23k to play with to fill out incidentals, also you would be giving him a pretty challenging class to play might keep him interested.

give him nothing.
let him borrow a druid/wiz to port/evac people around for plat and let him buy his own damn gear.

Tailoring my full set of patchwork leather from ruined bear pelts got me hooked on this server. I felt invincible when I cobbled together banded pieces, and godly at level 30 when I had full totemic.
MMO's are about progression...why start at the end?

To answer your question and it is one of the many reasons EQ is the best, because you can.

I'd buy him some 5/55 rings, a sword of skyfire and some ro armor for whatever class and tell him it cost 50k.

SoS, 5/55 rings is more than enough to carry any melee class that can use 1HS to L10. Don't give him the fish, teach him to fish.

I think a Bard is a bad idea. Your telling me a Noob is going to kite 60 mobs or twist 3 to 4 songs all day in a group? Not knowing zones with no maps, etc. And who needs a partner if you can AoE kite.
