I'm so torn. As a half elf, I can worship Erollisi Marr, who is like the coolest godess ever, and I won't hurt too much from low str. But as a high elf, I get to be part of the cool high elven society, be all nature-y, and won't suffer from low wis. What should I do? :(

What? :P

I love elves! And the paladin class seems so romantic. What's wrong with them? Awesome tank, heals, stuns... seems great! :)

Whichever you choose, you may want to worship Tunare (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4646).

Is that quest available at the beginning?

If you pick either of those races and don't go Tunare you've done yourself a disservice.

Erollisi Marr is much better than Tunare, and no sword is worth giving up RP opportunity :P

Ok, Paladins are tanks first and foremost. Stam is what you need. second id say str is what you need. I played a pally on live to lvl 50 and i NEVER used my healing in groups worth a crap. It just wasnt needed. Your heals wont ever be good enough to matter pre 50. After that i dont know. So wis isnt a factor imo for choosing race. Half elf is a better choice than a high elf. High elfs is barely a step up from erudites, and that isnt saying much. Yah they have higher Wis, but at lvl 50 youll wish you had had the extra stam/str on your way there.

Thats my two cents.

If ya dont go dorf, ya should go half-elf, not for the stas, but cuz they look awsome in plate:-)
And sure there is a little pain to lvl a pally, but when ya get to know the class, ya gonna love it.

Welcome on board!

PS, call me in game and i have some starting gear for ya.

half-elf - diety: tunare

all starting stats - sta to max - left over agi.

if you're smart... roll something useful like a rogue / wiz / enc / cleric.

Pick high elf, be part of the snobby elf society and go with Tunare to wield your sword as a defender of nature.

Also, while you're at it, go get yourself http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4424 to click between every swing... 12dmg, but 3 sec cast time and used inbetween swings will definitely add up.

I know this is going to sound cliche, but really...play what makes you happy. If you want to be a half-elf worshiper of the Lady Erollisi, go for it. Leveling a paladin is tedious (that xp penalty is painful), that's the plain honest-to-God truth, but they really are a fun class to play. You're going to hit more than cast, so build based on being a tank, not a caster.

(I am a closet paladin...high elf...and I love her. :) )

Somewhat true that Wisdom pre-50 isn't too relevant, it's very relevant after 50. Especially in Velious.

[[ From a RP perspective it doesn't feel right playing a paladin worshipping Tunare. I think that if you really care about the starting stats more then you are a min maxer and should go High Elf / Tunare for the defender, if you are not a min maxer (don't see the point myself, you never even notice the difference ) then play what fits the bill, play what you think looks cool as a paladin because if you don't enjoy the class/race combo you are pretty much in for a hellish grind probably only to reroll before you even get into the teens ]]

Assuming you are dead set on HIE or HEF, pick Tunare, simply for the Nature's Defender (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4646). One of the best looking weapon graphics ever, and a good sword to boot.

Then the next decision is based on looks. Here are the Velious armor textures for Half-Elf (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4931/halfelfv.jpg) and High Elf (http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/2705/highelf.jpg). High Elf is better in my opinion, but you can make your own conclusions.

From a min/max perspective, HEF get slightly better base stats, but both are inferior to DWF. ERU bring up the rear in paladin starting stats.

Good luck!

From a min-max perspective, it's a paladin <_<. Brellsbot~

Also, nature's defender is...okay? But it's absolutely destroyed by most velious equivalent weapons. Even something as silly to attain (and droppable, so save ya plats) as Narandi's Lance vastly outperforms the weapon. Also, it's a spear, and fuck yeah spears.

edit: I should also point out that paladin's did make fairly good group healers, often forgoing melee stats for simply caster stats to spam more aoe heals in melee groups. Even with hybrid fixes, without defensive, it's simply a trash tank for the most part.

A couple things:
While ND is a fine weapon, the lack of 2H Bash means it's inferior to FD. It is, as you point out, also inferior to some Velious weapons. However, I take issue with your use of 'Equivalent', as ND is ridiculously easy to get - especially compared to Epic.

Further, I saw only a handful of Narandi's during live - hardly a common weapon.

Finally, aside from Epic (much more difficult) and raid loot, it's a difficult weapon to upgrade in Velious. I raided NToV, Sleepers, PoG, etc - I didn't completely obsolete my epic until Ssra, though I missed that roll on the Tunare sword once.

From a RP perspective it doesn't feel right playing a paladin worshipping Tunare...

Tunare is all about her Paladins and Clerics... I'm sure she loves the grubby Wood Elf Druids, too ... but they are kinda like the landscaping crew - as opposed the the High (and very white) Elves, who cannot even choose to be lowly Druids.

Remember - which playable race does Tunare most resemble? Certainly not the shorter, browner elf...

I made a high elf. Figure I can be a little bit haughty and a lot bit nature-y :P

And high elves are very much about nature! In the paladin guild there are people with names like Treekeeper, Windspirit and Woodwind. Plus, that the clerics and paladins all worship Tunare must say something about the race :)

Last night Caso gave me some great starting gear, and a dwarf warrior and erudite wizard gave me a sword and shield, respectively. Sorry I don't remember your names, but I appreciate all the cool stuff!
