Tecmos Deception

Trying to keep this brief:
Does duelist disc really only shine when you have significant +attack buffs? Such as avatar, or dance of the blade + mvaxius rousing rondo, etc? I've been using it most every chance I get since my rogue hit 59, and it doesn't seem to be the "zomg damage!" buff compared to deadeye or kinesthetics that I thought it would be/that I was told it would be.
It feels like backstabs with duelist and no avatar are shittier overall than backstabs with avatar but no disc popped. Sure, I see a 700-800 BS here or there during duelist (nothing over 900 yet through 30% of 59), but I also miss a ton of my backstabs and see an inordinate number of 200-300 BSs... and this is on level 45-50 mobs in KC/seb/HS/chardok. Hit my rogue with avatar though, and it seems like he's doubling for 400+ left and right.
