So do the GMs enforce the naming rules on 1999?
I see so many people with names like fartbarf and such. I'd like to see these eliminated, but I'm sure its time consuming.
I would like people to try and create a fantasy world, not a joke.

And yeah, for all the bitching and whining on here about keeping the server classic, everyone will rip your ass open if you even mention names that are against the rules.
Some people get names changed, some are allowed to continue.
If I recall correctly...
1.) A bard named "Diio" or somethin of the nature had his name changed to just "Dio."
I asked him how he got the 3 character name.....
2.) Amelinda changed "Braad McQuaid"
Something about it was "celebrity" name....
3.) I asked for a name change once, was told "WE DONT DO THAT"
4.) Ogre Warrior w/ Guise named "Bigsandwich" went up for sale on the forums, someone bought it for like 200k and I'm pretty sure they got the name changed....
But yeah, there are names out there like:
Bruce Lee
Poopi Pants
Sickle Cell
Cheech N'Chong
Areyouangered Mybrother
It's a "hit or miss" type of thing.
The ogre sk named Sodomize was changed.

My character named Sloppay had a surname of Seconds and someone petitioned me and they changed it... That's what they told me anyways. Pretty lame, I've seen much worse out there.

while ive never been one to take on a dumb non fantasy name, im not supportive of restrictive naming policies. people should be free to be as creative as possible when coming up with names. some may occasionally cross the line and border on offensive but unless its racist or blatantly profane i think they should be left alone. i do not support people getting names changed for reputation purposes either or because you bought the character. if you choose to spend your pp on a toon with a bad rep you should be forced to carry that rep.

Can only change their name when I am online, at the same time as the person. Think I changed a dude named Analryape on Tuesday.
If I see it/have it reported I will change it. There are over 1000 different people who play on this server 24 hrs a day, a GM/Guide won't see everything all the time.

I wish I'd thought of Fartbarf... sweet name for an ogre...
I'm also against name changes unless there's some tie-in to hate crimes, etc...
On Live, I had a monk guildmate named Draggoon... we got a new lead server GM (Helenethea) several years into the game. She swooped in one day while he was pulling PoHate for us and forced him to change it on the spot, because it was too similar to the DE guard names... He was crushed, everyone else was enraged beyond belief, raid basically ended, and he drifted away from the game soon after...
What a twat...

That's bullshit. I agree with you 100% and you were nameraped.
GMs, listen. This kind of powertripping crap can really ruin someone's enjoyment of the game, and it sure as hell doesn't take away from my immersion when I see the Tassive Mesticles of the world walk by. In fact, I usually really enjoy it.

There can't be that many kids between 5 and 20 who will actually tolerate playing a game like EQ for more than passing moments... You pretty much had to be there when it came out to really love it. It is a sawed-off bitch of a game compared to the more current alternatives.

My SK, "Brik Shithouse" earned himself a 24 hour ban for a naming problem.
DESPITE...getting involved in 3 GM events with the surname and having no issue there. Just sat in EC one day and got dumped to the login screen. It said I was banned and the black hole forum (AKA petition forum) never got a response.
If I didn't keep trying to log in over the next couple of days I'd have taken it as exactly that, but it turned out to be a 24 hour suspension. Wasn't informed, bad GM experience for sure. Goes back to when Uthgaard and Hobby were still around, though I think Amelinda flipped the switch.

Yeah, not like Tigole Bitties wasn't one of the most famous players ever in EQ and now an employee of Blizzard due to his EQ fame or anything.
I had my name changed on live not because it was something offensive but because it was not what they considered a name, it was a statement/sentence and against the naming policy.

I had a bard on live named Kwetcher Betchin. Had no problems for 4 years, then 1 day I guess someone betched and I logged in with no surname. So I did /surname Betchin and it worked. All was right again. Still have the name.
Lol.....
I grouped, on Live, with a Gnome Magician once, his surname was "Jesuspuncher," I immediately did a /surname "Jesusslayer...."
The next day, we had both lost our surname privileges.
I knew a Troll on live with the name Scumbag, name change was forced on him because his name was "offensive", this regardless of all the NPCs that call players scumsuckers...
That said, from the names I see it appears that there are an awful lot of age 13 middle-school dropouts playing here.

name changes can actually really take away from your character..
i mean if you get your name changed at level 5 no big deal. but when your level 45+ and your name gets changed its a little heart breaking lol. on live i can remember 2 of my friends names being changed, and mine once. All level 50+ in velious expansion.
Phallus - got changed to like, blackenchallus or something like that.
Lilbadazz (dwarf warrior) - got changed to something completely non-related and friend actually striped all the gear and deleted the character.
Turnup Theradio (My bard) - surname got changed cause it had the word "the" in it.

Yes... Yes they are.
I enjoy a good, funny name just as much as the next person but some are
just down right as you've said.
What you name yourself can display what you think of yourself.
When I see a really unsavory name and that person is asking for groups or
help I have to ask myself
"Do I really want to group with someone like that?
Are they mentally sound? Do they have any idea how to play this game or
are they going to contribute to us getting wiped?"

+1. Looking for creativity. Not stupidity. I'm also a bit surprised at the younger ages that play here. Expected 99% of the population to be in their mid 20's as we're the eq classic generation.

I'd just argue it isn't classic. They were pretty religious about the naming policy back in 1999-2003. After that they slowly stopped caring on live. I know they were really pushing role playing in 1999-2001 and there were hordes of role playing guilds on servers.
Sort of sad that MMORPGs were taken over by gamers. Especially as I am a big fan of EQ's lore and always appreciated it up until Luclin.

Yes, she loved to take any excuse to get on a soapbox. TBH, I loved some of the inappropriate names. And since P99 isnt a profit based entity, there was no obligation to keep anyone from naming themselves after popular fiction. Which meant that doing so was just empty powermongering.

TEEN
Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling, and/or infrequent use of strong language.
So because you are letting your kids play that are not of age; others are supposed to abide by your own made up rules? Cool.
13 year olds these days hear a lot worse things at school than names like "Cummin Inyourmouth is, or Bigphat Bongpulls" if you don't think so, you're naive.
Get over it and play. Like others have said, if someone else's name ruins your gaming experience you definitely are playing the wrong game and are in the wrong community. The GM's don't need to waste their time with this crap, there are a lot of other issues as in any other issue that should take precedence over someone's feelings getting hurt because of a character name.

Ephi named raped my druid in blackburrow last week (i suspect a petty jelous fuck from my group snitched me out while i was helping them get there corpse back no less). What could possibly be wrong with the name "Dild Odaggins"? It's funny, its a fantasy reference, its roleplay and to be quite honest its completely non offensive. I think a name should only be changed if...
1. It's an obvious sexual reference. Who cares if a GM offends the virgin who picked that name.
2. It's boring an unimaginative related to the character class, example: Ihealstuff. If you can't do better than that, uninstall EverQuest and try bashing your head into the wall repeatedly.
3. It's related to an overplayed meme or joke that stopped being funny 2 years ago.
4. It's a weed reference. You play a 12 year old MMORPG. Obviously you smoke a grip of weed. WE KNOW, ok, you aren't cool. Everyone smokes weed, even your fucking grandmother.

Part of the problem is there are so many name squatters.
Anyway, I love some of the funny names (Nagger Plz is probably my favorite), Tpand Sowhore, Tassive Mesticles, etc. But there is a fine line between funny and just retarded. And many of the names cross that line.

When I played Warhammer Online a few years back I used the name Nordenwatch for my runepriest. I blatantly stole the name from one of their "Scenarios" called Nordenwatch. So I used the name Nordenwatch Popped cause thats what we would hear in vent if Nordenwatch, the best scenario ever, popped.
After about a year and a half with the name, in the best PVP guild in the server on the Order side, GM swooped in and changed my name to "Kalagrin". I quit immediately.
You invest a lot into your name, its your in-game identity and once changed you lose all the informal contacts you had with people, its not the best.
