View Full Version : Few questions for an old new player

Hi everyone. I'll jump right to the good stuff without any of the long, awkward introductions. :)

I've played EQ since release, dropped it years later when I joined the military. Nearly 9 years past that, I've had a hankering to see how the world of Norrath took shape, and after youtubing up the theme music, (incoming goosebumps), I read a few of the comments and was turned on to Project 1999.

Dear God! Is this what I was looking for?! A free to play EQ server with a thriving community?!

So I had a few questions that I'm sure have been answered elsewhere, but I either can't find them or I've found conflicting results with.

I understand I have to get the titanium edition of EQ or the Secrets of Faydwer expansion. But reading the forums a bit, it seems that even though we are ordering 16 or 17 expansions out, the game is currently at the Kunark level? Not that I'm complaining TOO horribly much, the idea of playing endless catch up with a horrendously complex game 18 expansions in doesn't appeal to me nearly as much as a lesser curve and discovering the magical sensation of re-discovering Kunark.

Since we are required to have the expansions up to date to play, do we at least have the option of using the Luclin models, or do we still have the box-head models of launch eq?

How is the server community and player base? Can I count on someone offering 3 bags of loot at 2am in E Commons near Torch 2? And can I expect to not be cursed out for looking and not buying anything?

Start me off there, I'm looking for a copy of SoF that I can get my hands on, I'd love to hear more back from the community. Thanks again in advance for any help ya'all offer! :)

I think 95% of people still use the box-head models (it's classic, after all!). There is a way around getting Luclin models on but I don't think its worth it :P

Community is fine, in a way the less you read the forums the more you'll enjoy just having the experience - there's forum trolls anywhere on the internet. One of the sad things about other MMOs is the majority of other players are selfish and look out for number one. Akin with the Live EQ servers back in the day, everyone here you tend to come across (or the vast majority at least) have retained the abillity to be unselfish, help others out... which for me is a big part of the old classic EQ experience.

You can DEFINITELY count on EC, things are slightly different. It's "legal" to run a casino on this server, or trade an account if you want to sell it (or buy one, as long as its with platinum, not $$/££/etc), so you'll see "WTS" for those as well as other items, but seeing the auction spam is a great part of reliving the classic experience too :)

As for getting a copy of Titanium, there are certain ways of finding it on the internet! You just need to know where to look, PM me if you need some assistance with that :)

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

They're at t1. :p

People in-game are nearly always friendly and helpful. I think you will enjoy it here.

I just started on Project 1999 about two weeks ago. Much like yourself I had played EQ when it came out for quite a long time and then left. I actually went back and played on live starting a few months ago and things have changed quite a bit. Leveling, traveling, everything is so easy on live. I three boxed up chars to level 50 in less than a week. There was a ton of new content and actually quite a thriving player base. The problem to me was that there was no one to group with until you hit the higher levels. I ran into so few real players while leveling and was never in a group. Everything was almost too easy, you barely lose exp when you die, you respawn with all your stuff, everyone is decked out in easy to obtain high stat gear.

Now I found out about Project 1999 about 3 weeks ago and after doing some research though it sounded really cool. So far I have to say that this community is great. I have 3 chars all different classes/races all around level 8. People have been so nice to me. I have had more than one complete stranger come up to me while I was hunting and hand me a bag of gear, or give me money, all just because I was new. I have grouped with people and had a lot of fun. Also, the game is actually difficult again. I have had a couple of close calls where I died in bad spots and had to run back naked to get my corpse, or died and lost a level and have had to grind it back. I am really glad I found this server.

Hey KingKong, I also played EQ when it first came out and dropped it for awhile after going into the Navy. I started playing p99 casually/semi-regularly about a year ago, and in my opinion, the community here is great, and I hope it lasts a long time. I'm really impressed at the amount of people still playing despite all the competition from other great games and media out there right now.

Nice. Where ya stationed at Groo?

And I quit EQ to play WoW, and got to a point where WoW had to quit me instead of me quit WoW. Life now won't let me be a hard core player, too much going on and too many deployments looming and family issues, but a little EQ play could be awesome. :)

just an FYI,

Secrets of Faydwer will NOT work for this server. it must be Titanium.

Be polite and civil in the general channels and you will be helped. Several of my new characters were blessed with platinum just for being genuine and honest in public channels.

Ignore the forums. The PvP server + anonymity attracts the dregs. Do not let a vocal hyperminority lead you astray.
