View Full Version : Dunedigger Spawn Mechanics

Last night I was grouping in N Ro with a great group of people at Derv 3 and we had the pleasure of an unexpected visit from the Dunedigger. We were all even more elated when he dropped and left behind his shield!
I was amazed to see him, as in my 10 year experience with EQ I have only seen him once before, and at the time, all he dropped was a hide.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had very little idea how this Ultra-Rare NPC's spawn mechanics work. As I searched, I found out that no one else really had any idea either.
Here are a few of the things I have heard...
He spawns only once per EQ year
He spawns once every RL 2 Weeks
He spawns after lots of little armadillos have been killed
He can spawn near the sunken tower in N Ro and can path around the zone
He spawns near Derv 3 and does not path
From my experience with him once years ago on Live and last night here on P99, I can say that in both instances He spawned near Derv 3 and did not path. Also, I did not see any other mobs spawn where he had, even after several hours at that location.
I would love to learn a little more about this...what do you all think?

The armadillo at derv 3. Yeah that one. That's supposedly the PH. He spawns there and takes a little jaunt around nro, whereas the PH is just permaparked at derv3. As for rarity I have only seen him up three times on p1999, I suspect that he has a time related spawn no one has figured out (ie day/night at x time) like many of the other rare spawn mobs.

i bought my shield from some lucky noob who killed him. He was 100% fresh still in his newbie robe and some cloth armor. He said he found him while killing armadillos.

Must have been one tough Newbie! Or else there is more than 1 version...
When we killed him last night he was Red to our whole group (level 7-12). Max hit on me (11 paladin) was 35 dmg.

You know that is one thing I LOVE about CLassic EQ. There are so many little known, super rare, mysterious creatures and items in this world that a character can go from rags to riches, all from being in the right place at the right time. I have played a lot of other games and never felt that same vibe.

That's hilarious if the stationary spawn being the PH is true. I hunted at that derv camp with a couple different characters and the stationary Armadillo was always there and not once did I ever bother to or even think to kill it.

I have never seen an armadillo there at all...I hope it is not something like DuneDigger being on a 2 week spawn time and 50% of the time it is his PH...ugh that would suck.

He was on the southside of the giant spire rock usually just staring longingly at the female ogre shaman in the derv camp. :D

That is where we found Dunedigger...just sitting there with a big smile on his face looking at that ogre...Never saw any other armadillos there in the last several times I have been to that camp, could have just been unlucky though...

ya when i finally got there and seen he was a newbie i was so excited and happy to be paying this newbie a huge chunk of money instead of someone that was just re-selling it.

killed -376, -376, was pathing North towards the water before I tagged him. Most definitely does path if he lives long enough on p99.

You're welcome, when P99 was first released Dunedigger had a very obvious PH and was super easy to farm. I bug reported that shit and they changed it.
I had only seen Dunedigger once of all my EQlive playing, and we popped him like 6+ times while grouping at Derv3 in the first week or two.

Yeah. Nilbog mentioned in IRC that he had to come up with something for him since live data on him was so scarce. Even with his new spawning I have now seen him more on p1999 than I did in classic hehe.
